Air filter replacement, next to oil change, is the most important basic maintenance for your engine. A dirty air filter has a direct effect on how long your motor will last. Its functions include removing dust and dirt particles and preventing other foreign objects, such as leafs or bugs, from getting into your engine. It will also, in most cases, prevent a fire from occurring after a backfire from the engine. If your vehicle is driven in a very dusty conditions, check weekly. Open the hood and locate the housing that holds the air filter element. Most cars have either clips or screws holding the housing together. Remove and inspect the filter.

Check both sides of the element. Check the grooves of the filter for dirt and grime. Drop the filter on the floor. If you can see dirt on the floor, it's time to replace the filter.

Reverse the removal process and check that it is installed properly. Make sure there are no gaps around the edge of the housing and that it is secured tightly.

Start the engine to ensure that it is working properly.
